Biochemical studies have illuminated many aspects of health and disease, and, conversely, the study of various aspects of health and disease has opened up new areas of biochemistry. This relationship between medicine and biochemistry has important philosophical implications for the former. As long as medical treatment is firmly grounded in a knowledge of biochemistry and other relevant basic sciences, (e.g. physiology, microbiology, nutrition), the practice of medicine will have a rational basis that can be adapted to accommodate new knowledge.
